How To Apply To Colleges: Best Tips Ever

It's college application time! Land yourself in the degree program of your dreams with these application tips that can make seeking out education a snap.

#1. Choose the Right College

There are 4,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. Which one is right for you? First off, it's important to realize that there's no perfect school; get close enough, and you'll have a great college experience. Narrow down your options by thinking about school size, location, campus culture, and your own academic interests before making your choice. If you are considering online universities, be sure to explore tech support resources and virtual library access.

#2. Write a Great Application Essay

Once you've picked your dream school, you'll be understandably nervous about crafting the perfect essay. The best college application essay not only talks about an event or accomplishment, but also what you learned from it. Personality and honesty are important, and while your impulse might be to show your drafts to friends, family, and strangers, avoid creating an "essay by committee" that takes out your own unique voice.

#3. Be Bold on College Recommendations

Look to high school teachers that meant a lot to you, bosses who have seen you shine at work, religious leaders who have seen your work in the community, and more. Remember that most of these individuals write a lot of recommendation letters; don't be shy or persuade yourself against it with the worry that they'll turn you down. Be sure to give them at least a month to write the letter and let them know about any specific guidelines the colleges have.

#4. Explore Your Future Education in Person

Once you've whittled your options down, campus visits are an important way to learn more about your options. Try not to schedule more than two visits a day, and make sure you take the time to walk through the library, try the food, and interact with the school as if you were a student. It's easy to visit online schools: simply log on and explore your resources.

#5. Choose a Degree Program With Confidence

Choosing a major can be one of the more stressful parts of the college experience if you allow it to be. Think about how your personality fits with different careers, and what classes you enjoyed most in high school. If you're not ready to choose your specific degree program, allow yourself to explore different majors through general education classes.

#6. Take Financial Aid Options Into Account

You might feel you need to write off a degree program because of its cost. Before you do, however, make sure you're considering your financial aid options. Filling out a FAFSA can help give you a better idea of the loans, scholarships, and grants available to help you make it easier to get an education.

Take these tips to heart during the application process and you'll be more likely to find a school that suits your needs, allowing you to learn with confidence.
