Tips to Make Your College Education a Success

Getting accepted into the degree program of your choice is cause for a big celebration. But once the celebrating is done, it's time to buckle down and make the most of your opportunity for a great education.

Surefire Tips for College Success

Ready to jump into your new college career? Before you hit the gas and tear down the educational highway, take a moment to reflect on a few points that can make your study time and overall college experience more successful.

  • Pay attention. It seems like a simple tip, but it's not as easy as you might think. Arrive at every class with the determination to stay alert and focused. Listen to everything the instructor has to say, pay attention to the opinions and debate of your classmates, and keep your pen and paper handy.
  • Go to every class. Try not to miss anything. The more classes you attend, the more information you absorb. Many instructors give additional handouts, detailed lectures, or other information that you might find on an exam. If you weren't around for class that day, you could have missed out on a serious study session, and it could cost you points when it counts. Students in online learning programs should make sure to download lectures and carve out regular hours each week to listen to them--don't leave them all until the week before the exam!
  • Join a study group. Discussing the classwork with someone else can help you find deeper understanding of the material. Being in a study group holds you accountable--you have to study more often, because those who are in the group with you depend on your help, just as you depend on theirs. Besides that, it's much more fun to work with someone else than to sit in your room by yourself and study, so you might spend more time on the classwork than you would have if left on your own. Online students can set up virtual study groups and get many of the same benefits.
  • Take detailed notes. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you will remember all the key points of every lecture. Being in college means you are bombarded with information from all sides. Keep it all straight with detailed notes for every class. The more notes you take, the more material you have for later study, and that serve you well when exam time rolls around.
  • Don't get distracted. The social scene in college can be tempting, but don't let that temptation pull you away from your studies. Be wary of pledging to a fraternity or sorority if your grades are less than perfect. If you have chosen a traditional campus experience and are living in the dorms, watch how much you socialize, and consider moving off-campus if your grades begin to suffer.
  • Consider college your job. You might attend classes for only a few hours each day, but the study time your classwork requires will probably go beyond that. Consider college a full-time job--a very serious one that could determine the course of your future--and give it the attention it deserves.

Whether you opt for online learning or a traditional college experience, making your education a top priority is crucial to your success. Pay attention to every aspect of your degree program, take your studies seriously, and soon you reach the end of that road with a freshly-minted degree to show for it.
